From September 2025, every Waitrose own-brand chicken product - including frozen, processed and ingredient - complies with Better Chicken Commitment criteria, which includes a prohibition on the use of Frankenchickens.
However, most of the other major UK supermarkets - including Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, Morrisons, Co-op, Asda, and Sainsbury’s - continue to use Frankenchickens.
Frankenchickens are bred to grow unnaturally fast, meaning they live short, painful lives. At just a few weeks old, many can no longer stand under their own body weight. Instead, they are forced to lie in their own waste.
I would like to receive emails from The Humane League UK with updates, campaign actions, volunteering opportunities, and other ways to help animals.
